BELLS FROM THE CROYDON FOUNDRY:
(Gillett & Co, Gillett & Bland, Gillett & Johnston)

The bell founders, Gillett and Bland (later becoming Gillett, Bland and Co. and Gillett & Johnston in 1884) were based in Croydon, Surrey. They cast bells for Kent between 1877 and 1953. Whilst the foundry is no longer casting bells (it still exists as a firm of clock makers) extensive records of their work exist which therefore permits an analysis of their share of the bellfounding business in Kent.

The records are stored at Croydon Library. An index of these records was produced by Alan A J Buswell and is also kept at the library. In this exercise, the author has been through all of the foundry records and headings in the index to ascertain exactly how many bells were sent to Kent. There are a number of bells that arrived in Kent 'second hand' and therefore do not appear in the records as Kent. These have also been included.
This exercise has also assisted in the work to double check the quality of the data collected for the index as errors had been introduced through the process of converting the spidery handwriting of the Gillett founders into print.

The links below lead to tables summarising all the bells supplied to Kent, giving an indication of their fate, where known, primarily through the author's own research. A Microsoft Excel version of the table may be downloaded from here in case the reader wishes to perform various sorts on the data.
Further work may still be done and the author would be grateful for any additional information that others may be able to provide (e.g. photographs of school bells, details of inscriptions, etc). Best thanks are due to Croydon Archives Library (and especially Chris Bennett the archivist), also to those who have assisted in the detective work to track down these bells.

Bell hangs dead visible in cupola above a turret bearing clock faces. However this is not the Gillett bell as this has now been discovered at the Grove Ferry Inn, Upstreet. It is not known whether bell 1844 ever came to this school, or whether it was replaced or stolen, but either way it is hanging elsewhere.

Update March 2008: Actually this does appear to be a Gillett bell on closer inspection. Which Gillett bell therefore remains a mystery, for now.

Bell no 1844 was originally cast for the John Roan School in Greenwich, however it has now been discovered to hang from the ceiling in this pub. Whether it ever came here via the school is unknown.  To confuse matters more, there is still a Gillett bell hanging at the School.

In G&J records as "Walworth, Beresford St". There is no Beresford St in Walworth, but there is in Woolwich on which street is a London Board School (similar bells to this went to these schools). It became Mulgrave School then Woolwich Polytechnic). The bell to Woolwich Union St is the same age as the school and it is likely this went there too, of which this might just be a recast or addition. All subjective at this stage. The school is currently being redeveloped and the fate of the bell unknown.

In G&J records as "Woolwich, Union St". I can't find a Union St, but a Board School was built in this year on Beresford St (MacBean St) so this bell possibly went there. There is a record of a bell going to "Walworth, Beresford St" in 1898 which may also refer to this school. The school is currently being redeveloped and the fate of the bell unknown.

In addition to these bells, there are other references to Gillett bells that would appear to be false:

ASHFORD, Christ Church (South Ashford)

Single

1884

Stahlschmidt refers to this bell, quoting the name of the Vicar as his source. However the person he names was actually Vicar of St Michael's, Tenterden at the time and there is no record of a Gillett bell existing there, nor is there an entry in the Gillett records.

MAIDSTONE, St Philip

1879

These two bells were marked in the tuning books in the new bells section, and one was even given a serial number. However there was also a note saying "Returned to foundry 29th Sept 1879". The note goes on to say that the bells had gone to Rosario. It is therefore likely that these were not Gillett bells but rather the two bells cast by Mears & Stainbank in 1858, returned to the foundry in exchange for the Gillett bell of 1878. Whitechapel records show that these bells were supplied at 1-2-10 and 2-3-10, which is consistent with the weights above.

TENTERDEN, St Michael & All Angels

Single

Stahlschmidt refers to this bell but there is no evidence it ever existed. It is probable that this bell was by Warners, cast at the same time Warners cast bells for the main parish church at St Mildred's, Tenterden.

WESTGATE & GARLINGE, St James

c. 4 cwt

Cannot find this bell in the G&J records. Stahlschmidt recorded a "small 4 cwt tinkler by Gillett & Co". He's been wrong before! Church consecrated 1873 so if a bell was acquired at that time, it would have been before Gillett cast bells.
