WEIGHTS OF PREVIOUS BELLS |
Initially, five bells came from St Marys Sandwich (cast by John Wilnar in 1639) after the collapse of the tower in 1663. They were recast into an 8 by Lester & Pack in 1763. Weights of the bells from Sandwich prior to recasting in 1763: |
1. 8-1-22 2. 8-2-13 3. 12-0-9 4. 15-0-6 5. 20-0-14
Weights of the 1763 octave prior to recasting in 1970: |
1. 4-2-2 2. 4-2-18 3. 5-3-8 4. 6-2-11 5. 7-0-11 6. 7-3-24 7. 10½ cwt approx., recast in 1809 by Mears to 11-3-27 8. 15-2-11
According to Stahlschmidt's "Church Bells of Kent" (1887), there was a local tradition that the 7th was sent here by mistake as it should have gone to Wye, and that the Wye people got the Elham bell. |
